Mary Ann (Macartney) Goodale (1821-1907), Angola, IN: Going Home

Recently, I came across a group of four family photos, all dating from the 1800s, that were up for auction at an inexpensive price that I just couldn’t pass up. Three are going to a descendant of Mary and one is going to a descendant of her grandson, Paul Goodale.

The common bond in the family grouping is Mary Ann Macartney, born 1 November 1821, New York. I don’t want to provide names of her parents because the online trees have no sources and her reputed father died in Ontario, Canada. However, she did have a brother Francis Macartney (1831-1910), whose photo was in her family collection:

Normally, I would be sending this photo to one of his descendants. However, although Francis married and had three children, his only son died as a toddler and neither of his daughters married. Therefore, Francis has no descendants today.

Mary Ann Macartney married Burdette B. Goodale (1817-15 June 1855) on 14 January 1841 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

They were the parents of four children:

  1. Albert, born 8 May 1842; died 18 October 1863, Battle of Chickamauga, Tennessee; unmarried
  2. Charles W., born 11 May 1844; died 5 January 1905, Steuben County, Indiana; married Margaret Ann Parrott, 1869
  3. Orville, born 11 March 1846, Steuben County, Indiana; died 18 December 1919, Steuben County, Indiana; married Mary E. Fast, 3 October 1867, Steuben County, Indiana
  4. Amelia, born 4 August 1848, Steuben County, Indiana; died 21 September 1925, Steuben County, Indiana; married (1) William H. Brandeberry, October 1871, Steuben County, Indiana (2) Abraham Stevens, c1880

Charles W. Goodale and Margaret Ann Parrott were the parents of six children:

  1. Burdette B., born 1870; died 1941; married Margaret L. Allman, 1897. They were the parents of two children.
  2. Alice Henrietta, 25 March 1872-6 February 1922; married Erwin Fitch Rose, c1894. They were the parents of seven children.
  3. Frank, born 1874; died 1886
  4. Paul, born December 1875; died 1926; married Jessie Blanche Fisher, 17 August 1904, Huntington, Indiana. They were the parents of three children.
  5. Mildred Amelia, born March 1878; died 8 March 1940, Calhoun County, Michigan; married Sidney Charles Huffman, 2 August 1904, Steuben County, Ohio
  6. Ford Norris, born March 1880; died 9 June 1948; married Nora Olive Burt, 30 October 1916, Steuben County, Ohio. They were the parents of one child.

Orville and Mary (Fast) Goodale were the parents of four children:

  1. Winifred Lucy, born January 1870; died 1942, Steuben County, Indiana; married Benjamin Ferrall, 27 January 1891, Steuben County, Indiana. They were the parents of one daughter.
  2. Albert Wilford, born 30 March 1873; died 10 September 1948, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California; married Eva Claire Morse, 9 November 1899, Steuben County, Indiana. They adopted one daughter.
  3. Mayme, born 30 May 1877; died 15 March 1961; married James Byron Allison, 25 June 1902, Steuben County, Indiana. They were the parents of one daughter.
  4. Ralph Hinsdale, born 20 May 1885; died 25 June 1962, Portage County, Ohio; married (1) Hazel Litchfield, 22 August 1914, Livingston County, Illinois (2) Grace Elizabeth Pearce, 22 August 1932, Hiram County, Ohio. Ralph was the father of one son and one daughter with Hazel and one son with Grace.

Amelia Goodale was the mother of two children:

  1. Callie A. Brandeberry, born 27 October 1873; died 22 June 1939; unmarried
  2. Orville Goodale Stevens, born 28 October 1883; died 13 June 1973; married Ornille May Wilson, 19 August 1909, Jefferson County, Iowa. They were the parents of one son and one daughter.

As one can see, Mary Ann (Macartney) Goodale has quite a few descendants.

There is a third photo in this family group, but I think the name on the back, Betty Moody, might be incorrect.

This photo was taken in the 1890s (the photographer, Charley Cary was in business in Angola in 1897), so this young woman was probably born in the 1870s. Betty Goodale who married James Preston Moody was born in 1918, so clearly she can’t be this lady. Betty (Goodale) Moody was the daughter of Ford and Nora (Burt) Goodale. James Moody’s mother was Alice Viola, born 1869, and his sister Bernice was born in 1900. There is also a photo of Alice on FamilySearch family tree which proves this photo is not James Moody’s mother.

Since it has come down through the years with Mary Ann (Macartney) Goodale’s photograph, I wonder if it might be either her granddaughter Alice Henrietta, born 1872, or granddaughter Mildred, born 1878.

In any case, this photo will remain with those of Francis Macartney and his sister, Mary Ann (Macartney) Goodale when they go home to a descendant. Perhaps others in the family might be able to correctly identify this young lady.

There are many descendants of Mary Ann Macartney, but I’ve decided to gift it to the youngest adult family member I could locate – one of her 3X great grandchildren!

  1. I’m sure the Macartney descendants are grateful for your kindness in gifting the photo! A lovely gesture that might even spark their interest enough to dig deeper into the family tree.
