Today’s family sketch covers the first of the Ogden family to have members take part in the Great Migration to the colonies.
Richard Ogden’s birth year is an unknown, except that he was born before 17 April 1576, as he was named in his grandfather’s will. It is thought that his eldest child was born c1595, so a birth year around 1571 might be a reasonable estimate.
The name of Richard’s wife is unknown, not even her first name, and she is lost to history except for her date of burial at Bingley, Yorkshire, England on 8 July 1627.
Richard Ogden was the father of four known children:
- Richard, born c1595; died after 21 April 1639; married Ellen Lupton, 1 September 1618, Keighley, Yorkshire, England
- Martha, born c1597; died about 20 February 1635/36, Bingley, Yorkshire, England; married William Sugden, 18 October 1619, bingley, Yorkshire, England
- Ann, born c1599; married Jarvis Robert, 5 November 1621, Bingley, Yorkshire, England
- John, born between 23 January 1605/06-1614; died before 30 May 1682, Elizabethtown, New Jersey; married Jane (MNU)
John became the first of the Ogden family to make the big decision to leave England and begin a new life in the colonies, living in Stamford, Connecticut, Hempstead, New York and, finally, Elizabethtown, New Jersey.
