Richard Ogden & Ellen Lupton, Yorkshire, England, 1600s

Richard Ogden was born c1595 in England, the son of Richard Ogden and an unknown wife.

This Richard said goodbye not only to his brother, John, who died in Eliabethtown, New Jersey in 1682, but also repeated the ritual when his sons Richard and John also chose a new life in the colonies.

Richard Ogden’s death date is unknown, just that no Richard Ogden is found in the Bingley church registers after 21 April 1639.

Richard married Ellen Lupton on 1 September 1618, Keighley, Yorkshire, England. She was the daughter of Christopher Lupton and Isabel Snowden.

Richard Ogden and Ellen Lupton were the parents of seven children. However, two died in childhood, there is no further information aside from the baptisms for three others and the two remaining children, Richard and John, left England.

Children (All baptized at Bingley except for Isabell):

  1. Isabell, 11 April 1619, Keighley, Yorkshire, England; buried 11 September 1636, Bingley, Yorkshire, England
  2. Richard, 25 March 1621; died before April 1687, Fairfield, Fairfield, Connecticut; married Mary (MNU), by 1644
  3. John, 10 July 1625; died before 1683, Rye, Westchester, New York; married Judith Budd, c166, probably in eastern Long Island, New York
  4. George, 14 October 1627; no further record
  5. Sarah, 31 January 1629/30; buried 21 July 1637, Bingley, Yorkshire, England
  6. Thomas, 31 August 1634; no further record
  7. (probably) Joseph, 21 April 1639; no further record

What became of Richard and Ellen is not known. It seems strange that the burial record of both would be omitted from Bingley church records, so it is more plausible that they either moved to another parish where the church records have no survived or even possibly that they left England with their sons, but died before appearing in any records in the colonies.
