Clark Family of Winslow, Maine: Photo Going Home

One of my favorite genealogy community activities is to return vintage photos home to descendants today.

Recently, I found this adorable photo, which happened to be part of a 6-photo miscellaneous lot.

Samuel & Priscilla Clark

Both children were identified with their ages:

Samuel -2 years, Priscilla -10 months

It was very easy to locate this family, as the photo was taken in Waterville, Kennebec, Maine and the Clark family lived next door in Winslow, Kennebec, Maine in 1910.

Samuel Clark Sr. was 31 years old. His wife, Annie C., was 34 years old. They had been married for 7 years and were the parents of three children:

1. Samuel, aged 5 years
2. Priscilla, aged 4 years
3. Douglas, aged 1 year

What was interesting about this family is that Annie was born in Idaho, while everyone else in the family was born in Maine.

Samuel Clark Sr. was born 3 May 1878 and died on 25July 1965, when his last residence was reported as Waterville, Kennebec, Maine in the SSDI.

Annie C. was born Annie Adele Douglass, the daughter of Forest Turner Douglass and Priscilla Leonard, who settled in Silver City, Owyhee, Idaho Territory by 1870. Annie was, indeed, born in Idaho about 1871. No death or burial record has been found for Annie, but she died, probably in Kennebec County, Maine, sometime after the 1940 census.

Annie’s father, Forrest, served in the Civil War. He died, probably in Idaho, between 1880 and 1900. Priscilla returned to Maine, where she died on 14 October 1903 in Sidney, Kennebec, Maine, where she is buried. Priscilla was only 58 years old and died of a stroke.

Fifteen months after her death, Annie gave birth to the daughter she named for her mother, little Priscilla seen in the photo.

What became of their three children?

1. Samuel was born 19 September 1904 in Augusta, Kennebec, Maine and died 9 February 1987, Shapleigh, York, Maine. He married Doris K. Spaulding and they were the parents of four children. Three are deceased, but one child is still living and another might be.

2. Priscilla was born 6 January 1906, Waterville, Kennebec, Maine and died 28 August 1990, Manchester, Essex, Massachusetts. She never married.

3. Douglass was born 3 April 1909, Winslow, Kennebec, Maine and died 24 July 1987, Waterville, Kennebec, Maine. He married Alice Ruth Thing, 26 December 1931, Winslow, Kennebec, Maine. They were the parents of one daughter, Sheila, born 25 May 1936 and died 22 September 2013, Durham, Strafford, New Hampshire. She married Sidney W. Farr in May 1960; they had at least one child who is still living.

Therefore, little Priscilla has no descendants, but her brothers Samuel and Douglass both do and this cute picture is going home to one of them.
