Here we are in the first weekend of June with summer – and desert heat – only a few weeks away.
Randy Seaver has given us the first SNGF challenge of the month. It’s a short challenge in terms of words, but I’ll have to put my thinking cap on to remember all the societies!
1) What genealogical or historical societies have you joined to pursue your family history research over the years?
I’m not even going to try to remember the years, but here’s my list:
1. Pomona Valley Genealogical Society (CA)
2. New England Historical Genealogical Society
3. Morgan County Genealogical Society (TN)
4. Roane County Genealogical Society (TN)
5. Maine Genealogical Society
6. Tennessee Genealogical Society
7. Kentucky Genealogical Society
8. Essex Society of Genealogists (MA)
9. National Genealogical Society
10. New Brunswick Genealogical Society (Canada)
11. Virginia Genealogical Society
12. Southern California Genealogical Society
13. Federation of Genealogical Societies
14. Lawrence County Ohio Genealogical Society
15. Missouri State Genealogical Association
16. North Carolina Genealogical Society
17. Arkansas Genealogical Society
18. Hempstead County Genealogical Society (AR)
19. Muhlenberg County Genealogical Society (KY)
20. Hopkins County Genealogical Society (TX)
21. Cape Cod Genealogical Society
22. Utah Genealogical Association
23. Pima County Genealogical Society (AZ)
24. Chula Vista Genealogical Society (CA)
25. Essex Society for Family History (England)
26. Virtual Genealogical Association
I do know that the first two societies I joined were the Pomona Valley Genealogical Society, as my local society when I lived in California and the New England Historic Genealogical Society because I made extensive use of their book loan program via mail.
The other societies coincided with ancestor interests as I pursued various branches on the family tree. All of those memberships were pretty much pre- and early-internet.
Today, I still belong to the New England Historic Genealogical Society, which is known as AmericanAncestors online. I also currently belong to the Utah Genealogical Association, the Chula Vista Genealogical Society, the Pima County Genealogical Society, the Virtual Genealogical Association and the Essex Society for Family History in England.
I imagine I’ve probably forgotten one or two local societies, but I think I remembered most of them.
Thanks, Randy, for this walk down memory lane.
Wow, that’s quite a list! I, too, joined when I wanted something out of a society, whether research help or to view their content.
