John Logue and his family are somewhat of a mystery to me, at least in terms of documenting his life and family.
I haven’t been able to access the book, but Jane Gray Buchanan self-published a family history in 1980, an addendum in 1984 and a Thompson family history in 1987, which included details about the Logue family.
From what I have found online, it seems everyone has shared pieces of her work.
What I would most like to see is an image of the will of John Logue, written in 1769. That doesn’t seem possible, though, because whenever John’s will is mentioned, it says it wasn’t recorded! The will supposedly exists/existed? among family papers.
Because the will wasn’t recorded, there is no way to know exactly when John Logue died. However, the 1790 census doesn’t include a single Logue household.
There are two land grants issued to John Logue of Orange County. The first is dated 11 February 1761 for 280 acres. John and wife Jannet sold this land to his son-in-law, Matthew Lindsey, on 10 August 1769. (Deed Book 3:251) It was recorded at July Court 1770.
Whether that signifies that John had died, there is no way to determine.
There is a second land grant, dated 1779, to John Logue. However, there is no way of knowing which John Logue this is – probably John Jr. though – and no index entry is found for the sale of the land. If it belonged to John Jr., he died in 1783 in Davidson County, Tennessee.
No one really has any idea about the birth years of John’s children, or for that matter, whether they were full or half siblings since John is said to have married (1) Matilda (MNU).
To compound the problem, John’s birth year is only an estimate, too. Since his father’s birth year is estimated as 1675, I am estimating John’s birth as c1700. Whether he was born in Pennsylvania or New Castle County, Delaware is also unknown.
However, Ephraim Logue, his purported father, is found on the tax list of Chester County, Pennsylvania as late as 1721 so I would say that John was born in Pennsylvania.
BEWARE THAT THIS WILL HASN’T BEEN ABSTRACTED BY ANYONE I KNOW AND APPARENTLY IS UNAVAILABLE TO VIEW. TREAT INFORMATION AS CLUES TO BE PROVED!
Children:
- Mary, born c1733; married Matthew Lindsey and perhaps a Robertson
- Ephraim, born c1738; died before December 1780, Caswell County, North Carolina; married Mary (MNU).
- Ann, born c1742; married Thomas Thompson
- Eleanor, born c1744; married Thomas Hart
- Margaret, born c1745; married Lawrence Thompson (c1740-1804)
- John, born c1748; died about 13 February 1793, Davidson County, Tennessee; married Eleanor Tinnin
There is a Will for Ephraim Logue, dated 1780 on file in North Carolina
Hi Charlie, Yes, I have that one, but it is for John’s son, Ephraim, who left a wife and daughter. I’ve never found a will for John.
