From my personal postcard collection
Do you know the origins of Valentine’s Day? It is named for a 3rd century Roman saint, St. Valentine. He was reputed to be a priest, or possibly a bishop, who helped persecuted Christians.
St. Valentine was martyred and buried on 14 February, hence the day celebrated as Valentine’s Day, established in 496 A.D. by Pope Gelasius I.
However, because of the many legends and few factual details known about this man, some believe that St. Valentine was not a real person.
Whether or not St. Valentine really existed, “his” holiday is celebrated worldwide by lovers everywhere.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
